The Eight Key Characteristics of a Disciple of Jesus
1.Prayer: A disciple is committed to growing in prayer
Mark 1:35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed
Phil 4:6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
2.The Bible: A disciple is committed to growing in their understanding of the Word of God.
2 Tim 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
3.Love: A disciple is committed to growing in love for God and one another (service)
John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 15:9 "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love
4.Holiness: A disciple is committed to growing in holiness and purity
1 Peter 1:15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;16for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
1 Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God
5.Kingdom authority: A disciple is committed to growing in knowledge and use of Kingdom Authority
Luke 9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick
Luke 10:19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
6.Reproduce: A disciple is committed to evangelism and discipling others
Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Luke 10:2He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
7.Worship: a disciple is committed to growing in worship and sacrifice toward God.
John 4:23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
2 Cor 9:7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver
8.Emotional & Spiritual health: A disciple is committed to growing in emotional & spiritual health.
Matt 12:34For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
Eph 4:29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.32Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
